Frequently Asked Insurance & Roofing Questions
Quick answers to the most common roofing questions
What is best roof material?
The most popular roofing material for homes is asphalt. In fact, over 70 percent of all single-family homes in the US are roofed with asphalt shingles. Asphalt (sometimes called composite shingles) are popular because they are affordable, they can provide solid protection, and they can be made in a variety of colors and textures to compliment your home. While there are various qualities of asphalt shingles, the premium grade asphalt can do an excellent job protecting your home from the storms and elements that can be so tough on Houston area roofing systems. While we install many brands of shingles, we personally recommend CertainTeed for the sustainability and quality of their product. If you prefer something other than asphalt roofing, then Blue Ribbon offers a wide range of other roofing materials, including Spanish tile and metal roofs.
When is the best time to start working on the new roof?
Roof replacement is best done when you identify the need – BEFORE it can cause significant damage to the interior of your home or building. You will also want to be mindful of the timing requirements of your insurance provider. Many of the insurance providers require that a roof replacement occur within a certain time period after the damage occurs. For example, if there is a hail storm that damages your home, you will want to make sure that your insurance company receives your claim within the required time period. There are few areas in the nation with more volatile weather patterns than Houston. So, we take all the precautions possible to work with Mother Nature to ensure that your roofing project is done expeditiously and is not impacted by the weather.
Will my insurance help cover my new roof?
There are important things you should do to increase the likelihood of getting the appropriate coverage for your roofing system in case of an insurance claim. Every insurance is a little different and the coverage will depend on your policy. It is a good idea to have your roof inspected regularly, especially after hail and heavy storms. Timing is sometimes important, because some insurance carriers have clauses that provide coverage within a certain time frame after a storm. We recommend that you call us and let us know that you would like to have a roof inspection. Then, if we find damage that may require an insurance claim, we will photograph the damage and we will help you through the insurance claim process to help your adjuster identify the damage and properly assess what needs to be done. We will be your advocate, working to ensure that your interests are met, and that you get the coverage that is needed.

What kind of roof should I choose for my commercial building?
For commercial roofs, we offer metal roofing, Bitumen, and TPO:
Metal roofing can offer strength and durability, and it can stand strong against the strong winds that often come with hurricanes and tropical storms. Metal roofs can last 50 years or more, and they are known for their energy efficiency because they can reflect solar radiant heat, and reduce energy costs. They are not susceptible to fires from lightning strikes, and they are environmentally friendly, since much of the material can be recycled. Metal roofs look fantastic, last longer, are fire proof, and offer a strong protection against hail storms. They can even positively impact your home value.
Bitumen roofing systems (sometimes referred to as Modified Bitumen) can offer a high tensile strength to help prevent damage to the roofing structure. They are strong, require little to no roof maintenance, and can work to effectively channel water to prevent pooling and larger roof structures. This helps prevent the slow deterioration of the roof due to water or moisture damage.
TPO roofing (otherwise known as thermoplastic polyolefin) is an extremely durable, rubber-based, cost-efficient roofing material. It is a single-ply roofing membrane that covers the surface of the roof. We can actually heat and “weld” the material in places around chimneys and other roof protrusions. TPO works well in a damp climate because it doesn’t promote mildew or algae growth and doesn’t require pressure washing.
The actual material is usually a combination of polypropylene and ethylene-propylene rubber – and the product is tough as nails. TPO roofing works well on flat (commercial) roofing buildings and can provide a low-cost option when budgeting is a concern. The TPO material can also provide a white roof that goes a long way in Houston to reflect sunlight and help prevent the heat that can come with darker colored roofing systems.
What makes you better than your competition?
Roofing is one of the most difficult things to evaluate from an outside perspective because few people have the knowledge to evaluate the difference. Usually homeowners don’t realize they’ve made a mistake until their roof starts leaking, long after the job is done, and often when the contractor they entrusted is gone out of business.
The best way to evaluate Blue Ribbon Roofing is to looks at the following facts:
- We are nationally recognized as one of the 1% in the nation as a CertainTeed Select Shingle Master.
- We have been warded an A+ by the Houston Better Business Bureau for five consecutive years and going.
- Less than 1% of roofing contractors in America have received the level of recognition that we have.
- Most guarantees cover materials, but not the labor. When you choose CertainTeed materials, the entire job is fully guaranteed – including materials AND labor.
